Located north of Moab in Utah and bordered by the Colorado River, it is made up of over 2,000 natural sandstone arches. The best way to see these beautiful geological formations is by exploring the best hikes in Arches National Park.

Easy to Moderate Day Hikes

If you want an easy hike that lets you relish the stunning arches and natural formations, these are some of the best hikes in Arches National Park:

  • Delicate Arch – Known as one of the most iconic hiking trails in the park, this one measures 3 miles (out and back) with an elevation gain of 600 feet. You can easily complete this hike in 2 hours. The massive (and iconic) sandstone arch is the main attraction of this hike. It has become the unofficial symbol of the national park, which is why it is a must. If you must explore only one trail in the park, this would be it.

  • Windows Loop & Turret Arch – A short and easy hike, this trail will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Do not underestimate that though since this trail has some of the best breathtaking views the park can offer. The minimal elevation and short distance are some of the reasons why it is a favorite by older folks and kids.

  • Sand Dune Arch Trail – A short yet sweet trail, this one is worth spending your time on because it is a secluded arch. There are also plenty of shady spots to relax in. From the cool canyons, soft sand, and ample shade, this trail measuring only 0.3 miles out and back is a welcome reprieve from your other hikes.

  • Tower Arch – Just when you think you’ve seen them all, the Arches National Park continues to surprise. The Tower Arch trail is a breathtaking hike that is worth spending 2 hours (or more) exploring. At 2.4 miles in length, you’ll get to marvel at the vibrant red rock formations of varying shapes on this trail.

Family-Friendly Hikes

If you are looking for hikes that are suitable for the entire family, the following are the best hikes in Arches National Park:

  • Park Avenue – This is a 2-mile trail that is short, but is not lacking in terms of the scenic views that you can enjoy. The starting point for this trail is at the Park Avenue Parking Area and spans a distance of 2 miles (out and back). It is a relatively easy hike making it suitable for families. This trail was named after the famous New York City street because the hikers who’ve explored this trail liken the notable sandstone spires you can see along the trail to the city’s famous skyscrapers. But unlike these skyscrapers, these formations were carved by nature.

  • Landscape Arch – This is another short hike that spans only a distance of 1.6 miles. This trail is flat and double-wide, so it is best even for inexperienced hikers. The opening to the Landscape Arch measures 306 feet - the longest stone span in the world. But since this has been around for a very long time, experts encourage tourists to explore this trail as this arch might not be around for too long (it could collapse in time). This trail also features a few short side trips that you can explore if you have more time.

  • Broken Arch – Adding to the list of family-friendly hikes in Arches National Park is the Broken Arch. This 2-mile loop trail welcomes you as you make your way through a big arch. You will also pass through sand dunes and slick rock.

  • Double Arch – Spanning a distance of less than a mile, the Double Arch trail is a flat hike that features junipers and oaks all around. If you hike during spring, you’ll get to see the state flower of Utah – sego lily. This is also a well-defined trail, so it is easy to follow.

Difficult Hikes

If you’re an experienced hiker, you might be thrilled at the prospect of conquering these trails:

  • Partition Arch and Navajo Arch – This trail takes 2.9 miles out and back; but don’t underestimate that distance as this can really challenge you. There is a short portion of the trail that requires you to navigate an uphill climb. You’ll need shoes with a good grip for this one!

  • Devils Garden Loop Trail – This is one of the longest trails in the park with a distance of up to 7.8 miles. There are, however, various turn-around points if you decide not to complete the entire trail. You will be navigating your way through narrow ledges at great heights – definitely something best left for avid hikers.

Tips When Hiking Arches National Park

There are a few things you need to know to prepare for the hike. Take note of the following information before you embark on a hiking adventure.

  • This national park is a barren landscape. Make sure you are packed with water and food before you set out for a hike. Wear comfortable clothes and appropriate hiking shoes.

  • The weather can change rapidly at the park. Take note of the weather forecast before you go.

  • Stay on the trail. Avoid disturbing any of the flora and fauna at the park.

  • Do not carve in the stones. Vandalism is illegal and so is taking anything from the park.

  • Always practice the Leave No Trace habit when hiking.

  • Start your hike early in the morning to avoid the crowds (as it is a popular hiking destination).

  • You can’t bring your dogs to the trail.
